Happy New Year!

January 30, 2010

4A is experiencing a shake up in our language arts program --- we spend one hour a day in literacy stations. The students are divided into groups and rotate through three twenty minute stations in the hour. This concept allows for a small group to meet with me each day where I can focus instruction on the needs of the students and help them make connections to their own learning. Thanks to one of GSSD's Literacy Coaches - Mrs. Hnatiuk for her advice and to my colleagues for their wisdom and support. I believe the students enjoy the independence and variety that literacy stations affords them and the opportunities to meet in small groups to discuss their learning.

Mr. Forsythe has been taking the grade fours skating - check your child's Agenda and the school website for February dates: vic.gssd.ca.

My mathpod has started to learn about TIME in math. The students are exploring oil pastels in the final stages of their Henri Rousseau jungle scene collages in Art. They are using the inquiry method to learn about the Plains Cree First Nations' way of life pre-European contact. And we are developing our team and individual skills in basketball in the gym. The next unit of study in Health is all about making choices regarding tobacco, alcohol, and other drugs.

Thank you for asking your child about their work at school and for signing his/her Agenda every day. We are working on the goals of being responsible and independent.

Thank you to our Educational Assistant, Mrs. Hudye, for working with our class in the mornings - you are a fantastic teacher!

Happy Holidays!

December 11, 2009

Christmas holidays are fast approaching and 4A has been preparing for the annual Victoria School Christmas concert. The students have done the majority of the decision making about our skit entitled "The Real Santa", with only a little encouragement from me. It is a short story with some characters acting out the scenes. The students decided who would take which parts and what was required for props and actions. I am very proud of the way they are working together as a team to teach you about Nicholas, a real-life saint who lived about 1500 years ago. We hope you enjoy the traditional hymn that will be sung in English as well as Ukrainian.
As an assignment for Visual Art, the students have designed and coloured nativity scene posters for the annual Knights of Columbus poster contest. It is due on Mon. Dec. 14.
Next week is a busy one...we are in charge of creating the centrepieces for the Christmas dinner on Friday and we will help the Kindergarten kids make real gingerbread houses on the morning of Dec. 18. Dress rehearsal follows the Christmas meal. The students are allowed three guests to join us for the festive meal.
We are continuing our studies in Health - the digestive system and in Social Studies - a look at how the Plains Cree lived so many hundreds of years ago in Saskatchewan. We have sent away letters to St. Nicholas and will continue the practice of writing letters by composing a friendly letter to a new friend in Samara, Russia in the new year.
Spelling Lesson 4 is due and will be tested on Wed. Dec. 16.
Of course, the Christmas concert is Monday, December 21 at 1:30 pm (with half our actors) and the evening performance at 7:00 pm (the rest of the actors).
The last day of classes is Tuesday, December 22, with dismissal at 1:48 pm.
Happy Holidays!!! Enjoy the time spent with your kids!

Monday, November 16

Nov. 16

We are having a very fun time in our math pod. I think it is great to go to a different class to do a different subject. Also our science teacher Mr. Forsythe is just teaching us about different types of clouds. I think that is very cool to learn about that kind of stuff. In phys. Ed. we are learning how to bump, set, and serve in volleyball. Also we have an Early Dismissal on Thursday the 19th at 12:15. We also have a spelling test on Friday the 20th. hot lunch is hot dogs this week. The Remembrance Day Service was a great succses. And last week we went to the Harvest Showdown and that was also cool all because of the horses or the team penning but the baby pigs and baby chickens were the best.

Welcome to 4A!

Good afternoon families and students of 4A!

Welcome to our class blog. A blog is like a newsletter where students and I will be posting what's happening in class and other important events. I encourage you to bookmark this website under your favourites and refer to it often. I will get the kids to write a note in their agenda to draw your attention to it once new information has been posted.
I am trying to reduce the amount of paper that goes home so I will use this tool for communication as much as possible.
We are off to a great start in 4A...I have been spending time each day encouraging routine and procedures and instilling independence. Thank you for faithfully signing your child's Agenda and for writing notes to me and your child in it so that we are all informed on what's going on.
Thank you for returning all the paper work that the office requires and I trust you have paid your child's $10 school fee already.
  • school photographs October 9th
  • Cross Country runners race in Saltcoats Friday, September 25 - a note will be sent home

Please email me jthomas@mail.gssd.ca or call the school 542-2546 when you have a question or concern.
